Getting your home ready for the holidays can make the most wonderful time of the year the most stressful time of the year. So how can you keep the fun in the festivities and reduce the pressure of the preparations? Crank up some Christmas music and check out our stress-free tips for sprucing up your home.
1. Begin with a thorough cleaning.
Commit at least half a day to giving your home a thorough dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping. Clean your fridge and remove any old or expired items. Tidy your pantry to make room for new snacks. Be sure to involve the whole family. As the saying goes, many hands make light work.
2. Box it up.
To make room for your seasonal decorations, carefully store your regular home decor and accessories in a clear tote. Before decorating for the season, take a photo of each room to make it easier to return items to their original places.
3. Perk up your place with paint.
If possible, repair and paint any walls that need attention. This is a relatively quick and easy way to refresh your space.
4. Make your mantel merry and bright.
Since your mantel is a focal point, make it dazzle! Hang your stockings and add some garlands, lanterns, LED candles, and other accents. If you have the space, add a wreath or holiday-themed picture above your mantel.
5. Deck out your dining room table.
Add some color and interest to your dining area with a table runner, decorative placemats, centerpiece, or candles. Just a few little touches can go a very long way.
6. Liven up your living room.
Add some blankets and holiday-themed throw pillows to your couches and chairs for a festive touch.
7. Don’t forget your bathroom.
Place some holiday-themed towels and soaps in your bathroom. Consider swapping out any existing artwork with a seasonal picture.
8. Bring on the scents of the season.
Add warmth and ambiance to your home with seasonal candles, wax melt warmers, or your own homemade simmering holiday potpourri.
9. Know when to let it go!
Remember that you don’t need magazine-worthy decor to enjoy the holiday season. And it’s okay not to display every single decoration you have. Consider displaying only those items with the most meaning to you and giving the rest away to family, friends, or a local charity. What truly matters most this season are the memories you make with those you hold most dear.
