As you savor the beauty and joys of the fall season, be sure to carve out some time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead. Use our Fall Maintenance Guide for Homeowners to help ensure your home is safe and comfortable this winter.

1. Inspect Your Roof

Your roof protects your home and everyone and everything inside it. If it is exhibiting the common signs of trouble noted below, or getting up there in age, get it inspected by a professional.

Signs of a Roofing Problem

  • Missing Shingles

  • Cracked, Buckled, or Curled Shingles

  • Granules in Your Gutter

  • Light Holes or Moisture in Your Attic

2. Clear Your Gutters

Clearing your gutters this fall is essential to preventing potential winter damage to your home. As leaves and debris accumulate, they can block water flow, leading to overflow that may cause roof leaks, foundation issues, and even mold growth. Any trapped water can freeze when winter arrives, creating ice dams that further compromise your roofing and gutters. By cleaning your gutters now, you will protect your home from costly repairs down the line and ensure that water drains properly.

3. Check Your Heating System

Before the cold weather sets in, replace your filter and check for any signs of wear or malfunction. Schedule a maintenance checkup if it’s been a while since a professional looked at it. Doing so will ensure your heating system is operating safely and efficiently.

4. Seal Drafts and Add Insulation

As the temperatures drop, keeping your home warm and energy-efficient is essential. Inspect windows and doors for drafts and seal any gaps with weather stripping or caulk. To increase energy efficiency and reduce heating costs, consider adding insulation to your attic and basement.

5. Prepare for Power Outages

Prepare a winter storm emergency kit with flashlights, batteries, non-perishable food, and water. Consider investing in a generator to keep your home running smoothly during outages.

6. Clear Your Yard

Maintaining your yard in the fall is as important as maintaining your home. Check trees for dead branches that could pose a risk during stormy weather. If necessary, trim branches or hire a professional. Clear away fallen leaves to prevent mold growth and slipping hazards.

7. Protect Your Home from Fire

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends installing smoke alarms inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home, including the basement. Check or replace the battery when you change the time on your clocks this fall (and again in the spring).

Ensure a licensed electrician does all electrical work to avoid a home fire.

If you use candles, keep them away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended. Consider using LED candles as a safer alternative.

8. Prepare for Winter Weather

Finally, with fall leading into winter, preparing for the inevitable snow and ice is wise. Stock up on ice melt, and ensure your snow shovels and brushes are in good condition. Hire a snow removal service now if you cannot manage it yourself.
