Holiday Decorating Tips from the Pros

The temperatures are dropping and that means the winter holidays are coming! With so many of us spending so much time at home, decorating for the holidays is a great way to make our days a little warmer and brighter. Here are some holiday decorating ideas to get you started.

1. Deck out your door.

Nothing says “Happy Holidays” like a decorated front door. Add a wreath made from fresh greens and you’ll enjoy the evergreen scent every time you enter your home. If fresh greens aren’t your thing, purchase a faux wreath from your local department store, or make your own.

PRO TIP:  To hang a wreath on a door—without leaving an ugly nail hole—drive a small screw into the top of your door, leaving the head protruding slightly. Tie a piece of fishing line to the screw, tie the other end to your wreath and then drive the screw in completely. 

2. Don’t be afraid to play with color.

While red and green are favorite holiday colors, consider incorporating other color schemes into your decor—from black and white, to silver and gold, to shades of blue. 

Classic Blue, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2020, had a significant influence on the home décor industry, popping up in furniture, accessories, paint, and even Christmas décor! It pairs beautifully with so many colors, including white and/or silver, gold, platinum/champagne, blush, and even red. If your home includes navy accents, consider incorporating this fun and vibrant color into your holiday decorating!

3. Beautify your bannisters.

Adding lights, bells, bows, wreaths or greenery to your bannisters will make your entry look extra festive and welcoming this holiday season.

PRO TIP:  Zip ties are an easy way to string holiday lights, greenery, and more on banisters. You can find them at your local home center in the electrical supplies aisle. After the holidays, simply snip the ties off with scissors.

4. Dress up your table.

Since meal time is one of the most enjoyable and memorable parts of your holiday gatherings, your table should get dressed up for the occasion. You don’t need a lot of money, just a little creativity. 

5. Make your mantel merry.

When you decorate your mantel, you will turn your fireplace into an eye-catching focal point for the holidays. PRO TIP:  Since many holiday decorations are made of flammable materials, it’s important to keep them a safe distance away from the heat and flames of your fireplace—whether fueled by wood or gas.

6. Incorporate favorite family traditions and have fun!

When it comes decorating for the holidays, it’s fun to draw inspiration from designers and other professionals, but be sure to incorporate your own style and family traditions, and of course—have fun!
