At a time when the world seems to be moving from one crisis to another, many of us are experiencing feelings of uncertainty and anxiety. Now more than ever, we need to make self-care a priority. Since your home is your safe harbor in this global storm, it’s essential to incorporate elements of self-care into it. Here are six tips on creating a home environment that supports your self-care journey.

1. Create a warm and welcoming entryway.

When you return home from a long day at work or a trip to the grocery store, you want to be wrapped in calm and comfort. For this reason, it’s important to clear your entryway of clutter. Limit your shoes, boots, and coats to what you wear most often. Brighten up your space with a new rug or welcome mat. If you have the room, add a console table and some photos or eye-catching artwork. Consider applying a fresh coat of calming, neutral paint that complements the other walls in your home.

2. Use calming, neutral colors in your bedroom and bathroom.

Infuse some warmth and calm into your bedroom and bathroom with neutral paint colors, including soft grays or muted greens or blues.  Layer in some complementary colors with curtains, linen, and furniture.

3. Incorporate natural elements.

Flowers and greenery—both real and artificial—evoke the calm of nature in any space. Adding a bouquet of fresh flowers to your kitchen island, hanging a dried floral wreath in your bedroom, or placing a trio of faux succulents on your sofa table are some easy ways to bring the beauty and calm of the outdoors inside your home.

4. Bring on the scents.

Research suggests that aromatherapy has proven benefits in lowering stress, decreasing anxiety, reducing depression and improving sleep quality. Use a table top diffuser to spread fragrant essential oils through the air.  Try a few different scents or blends of essential oils to find the most relaxing ones for your home.

5. Create a home office.

If you work remotely, you should have a separate space where you can conduct video meetings without interruption, work and read in quiet, and store and organize important files and paperwork. A home office—once considered a luxury—is really a necessity for today’s remote workers.

6. Design a space that supports your interests and hobbies.

An important part of self-care is giving yourself the time and space to pursue your interests and hobbies. Unfortunately, overbooked schedules and work and family responsibilities often prevent this from happening. Now is the time to turn your unused formal dining room into a craft room; install a double oven so you can bake more; convert your extra garage space into a workout room; or design a cozy reading nook with plush furniture and pillows. Whatever your needs and interests are, carve out some space in your home that’s just for you.
