Originally designed by Richard G. Holt in collaboration with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, the home sits atop a sweeping hill overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee and Moultonborough Bay in Meredith, New Hampshire. After relocating from New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic, the homeowners sought to expand their outdoor living experience with a space that felt welcoming, functional, and deeply connected to the architectural language of the existing residence. The project was commissioned in early 2021 with a clear goal: create a refined retreat that honored the home’s legacy while enhancing year-round livability.
Grumble Knot
This bespoke screen porch and patio retreat was custom-designed in every detail, blending expert craftsmanship with natural elegance. A hand-built Douglas fir timber-framed structure anchors the space, complemented by radiant heated stone-tile pathways and thoughtfully integrated native landscaping. Artistic painted cedar and powder-coated aluminum railings feature a custom tree motif with birch balusters, echoing sculptural design elements found throughout the main home.
The screened porch provides an enclosed gathering space for dining and relaxation, while an adjoining open-air spa deck includes a sunken jacuzzi for year-round enjoyment. Discreet motorized canvas screens, sleek electric heaters, and integrated LED cove lighting ensure comfort across all seasons. At the heart of the landscape design, a sculptural elephant centerpiece adds a whimsical yet grounding focal point.An Elevated Outdoor Living Experience
