Remodel of Iconic Crafted Modernism

Contemporary Addition in Stoneham, ME

portfolio-item-background.jpg
  • Originally designed in 1997 by Mack Scogin Merrill Elam Architects, the Nomentana Residence is an icon of crafted modernism - defined by sculptural geometry, refined material expression, and a profound dialogue with its wooded lakeside setting. MSME and the client entrusted our firm with executing a meticulous renovation and addition that transforms a former exterior balcony and adjacent roof area into a fully enclosed guest bedroom and upper-level library, seamlessly extending the language of the original architecture.

  • Working within the home’s highly detailed existing framework required an exacting balance of preservation, innovation, and technical precision. The project included the careful demolition of the exterior fireplace, stone decking, and glazing systems, followed by the construction of a new conditioned enclosure that aligns perfectly with the building’s complex roof geometry and structural grid. Existing fiber-cement panels were catalogued and reinstalled to maintain consistent façade coloration and texture, while new windows, casework, and metal elements were custom fabricated to match the original profiles. Inside, the addition introduces a warm and inviting guest suite anchored by radiant-heated concrete flooring, refined wood detailing, and a relocated custom pivot door that preserves the character of the initial design.

  • Honoring The Iconic Work Of The Original Design

With an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship and continuity, our team delivered a seamless expansion that honors the iconic work of the original design while elevating the home’s comfort, performance, and livability. The result is a thoughtful evolution of the existing home - one that extends its legacy through subtle, enduring, and artfully executed construction.
