1700 Farmhouse Revival, Tamworth, NH

Historic Home Renovation and Addition in Tamworth, NH

  • Located along a quiet road in Tamworth, New Hampshire, this highly technical renovation and addition project focused on a two-story wood-framed farmhouse originally constructed in 1790. Set on a 6.5-acre lot, the project involved the complete transformation of the existing residence to improve energy efficiency, optimize the interior layout, improve finish quality, and enhance the long-term structural performance—all while preserving the home’s historic character. The site also includes a detached three-car garage and an adjacent workshop/barn structure.

  • One of the most complex undertakings was lifting the entire original structure onto engineered cribbing towers to install a new full-perimeter foundation system. The new reinforced concrete foundation included reinforced grade beams that integrated seamlessly with the existing granite and stone foundation, an insulated perimeter skirt designed to resist frost heave, and a combination of closed-cell spray foam and rigid insulation to ensure high thermal performance. We also provided targeted water-mitigation work on the lower level, including drainage improvements and interior insulation. We also installed a new heat pump mechanical system to provide efficient year-round climate control.

Throughout the structure, we framed existing framing elements with dimensional lumber, new wood timbers, and LVL beams. We used galvanized steel brackets to support the second-floor framing above the kitchen addition and provide robust support throughout all critical structural intersections.

Our team replaced select portions of the existing roof structure and installed standing-seam metal roofing over the new addition for durability and to maintain the rustic character of the original home.

Interior renovation work included a complete gut and reconfiguration of the kitchen. It now features colorful, red-and-yellow painted cabinetry—custom-fabricated by Country Cabinets, LLC—alongside a new farmhouse-style double-washboard sink, stone counters, intimate integrated lighting, and upgraded appliances. A new island, pantry, and sitting area expand the kitchen’s functionality and flow. The new mudroom and laundry room feature custom cabinetry, storage closets, a wash sink, and updated plumbing.

We refinished select interior walls and ceilings with new plaster and installed radiant-heated floors with wide-plank hickory boards, preserving the material language of the original home. We installed new Marvin double-hung and picture windows to match the historical profile and increase energy efficiency. A new classically detailed stair railing ties in with the existing aesthetic, and the updated floor plan includes improved circulation and increased natural light in the main living areas.

Site improvements included regrading, a new asphalt driveway, and updated landscaping for drainage and overall usability.

  • Historic Home with Energy Efficiency and Structural Integrity

With adaptive, hands-on problem-solving and a deep respect for its layered history, we transformed the home by significantly improving its energy efficiency, optimizing its interior layout, and enhancing its structural integrity.
