We’re spending a lot more time at home these days, giving us ample opportunity to take stock of our surroundings and look for ways to make improvements in both appearance and functionality. In fact, online searches related to home remodeling were up 84% between 2019 and 2020. At the top of the list of searches was bathroom remodeling. If you’re thinking of making some improvements to your own bathroom, here’s how to make sure they stand the test of time.
1. Avoid trendy designs.
Not all design trends are created equal. If you’re looking for a timeless bathroom, think twice about incorporating these trendy design choices:
Barn doors: Although popular right now, these will soon be a dated design choice.
Showers without doors: This is a trendy design choice, but may not be functional.
Exposed pipes: Once this industrial trend dies, it will be expensive to put the pipes back into the wall. A great alternative is to use piping as curtain rods for your shower or window.
Freestanding tubs: If you think you’ll sell your home in the near future, think twice about investing in a freestanding tub. They take up more space than a built-in tub, and because they are harder to get in and out of, they aren’t for everyone.
2. Stick with a neutral color scheme.
Instead of using a bold wall color, stick with rich, neutral shades. You can infuse pops of color into your bathroom with towels, rugs, and decorative accents.
3. Select an ageless tile pattern.
Pass on the trendy, bold floor tile patterns, and go with one that will age better. White, cream, or other neutral colors in a hexagonal or basket-weave pattern are always a good choice for a bathroom renovation. If you love patterns and color, opt for a bold rug you can swap out later.
4. Go with white marble countertops.
You can’t go wrong with white marble or faux marble countertops. They are a great choice for heavy-use bathrooms, and will never go out of style.
5. Invest in custom cabinets.
Quality-built custom cabinets will look amazing in your bathroom, and stand the test of time. “We build custom cabinets that are designed to your bathroom’s exact size and layout, maximizing your storage space. and adding both beauty and style,” says Robin Russell, project manager at Cormack Construction.
